Enter the page details

Fill in the page URL, title, description and image URL, or press Load Example to start from a filled-in card.

Open Graph Preview Guide

What Open Graph tags control

When someone pastes a link into a chat app or social network, the platform fetches the page and builds a preview card from its Open Graph meta tags: og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url. X (Twitter) reads its own twitter:card tags first and falls back to Open Graph. Without these tags, platforms guess, and the result is often a bare URL or the wrong image.

Images that work everywhere

Use a 1200 × 630 pixel image (a 1.91:1 ratio) for large cards, keep important text away from the edges because some platforms crop to a square, and keep the file under a few megabytes. The image URL must be absolute and publicly reachable: platforms cannot load images from localhost, staging sites behind a login, or relative paths.

When previews do not update

Platforms cache link previews, sometimes for days. After you fix your tags, use the platform's own debugger, such as the Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector, to refresh the cached card, or add a query string to the URL you share.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should an Open Graph image be?

1200 × 630 pixels, an aspect ratio of about 1.91:1, works across Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and the large Twitter / X card. Keep important text away from the edges, since some apps crop the image, and keep the file under a few megabytes.

Why is the old image still showing when I share my link?

Platforms cache link previews. Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to fetch the page again. Changing the image URL, for example by adding a version query string, also forces a fresh fetch.

Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?

Open Graph alone covers most platforms, and Twitter / X reads og:title, og:description and og:image when its own tags are missing. You still need twitter:card to choose the large image layout.

Can the image URL be relative?

No. og:image must be an absolute URL, including https://, that crawlers can reach without logging in. Relative paths and images behind authentication result in a preview with no image.

Why does my preview look different on LinkedIn and Slack?

Each platform builds its own card from the same tags, with its own crop, font and text length. LinkedIn may crop the image to a different ratio and shorten the title, and Slack shows the site name above it. The preview here shows the typical layout, so test the live link on the platforms that matter most to you.

Do Open Graph tags affect SEO?

Not directly. Search engines rank pages on their content and links, not on og: tags. Good link previews do earn more clicks and shares on social media, which can bring visitors and links that help over time.
